A Holistic Approach To Estate Planning

I take a holistic approach to estate planning, spending time with each of my clients to get a complete understanding of his or her full financial picture and goals. This allows me to recommend the best estate planning solutions for your unique circumstances.

It is key that every adult has at least a basic estate plan that includes:

  • Last will and testament: A will allows you to designate who will receive your property after death. With a will, you can also appoint a legal guardian for your minor children. Lastly, your will designates someone to administer your estate, known as a personal representative.
  • Health care proxy: With a health care proxy, you appoint an individual to make medical decisions for you should you become incapacitated. It also gives the health care agent specific instructions on medical treatments and life-sustaining measures.
  • Power of attorney: A power of attorney is a document that appoints a person to act in your financial interests if you become incapacitated. It can be effective from the moment it is signed (immediate power) or take effect once you have been declared incapacitated (springing power).
  • Trusts: If you have significant assets, trusts can be used in addition to the above estate planning tools to help you protect your assets and save estate taxes while also avoiding probate. I always take the time to explain the options that are available to you and help you select the best trust for your needs.

Depending on your goals and objectives, I can also recommend other professionals such as financial advisors or insurance agents who can help you take additional steps to protect your assets. If you own a business, I can assist you with small-business planning, partnerships and planning for the succession of your business.

I will take the time to explain the options available to you and help you create an estate plan that best suits your needs. I also offer estate planning for same-sex couples.
